There are two main types of hypervisors used for virtualisation; the Type 1 and Type 2 Hypervisors. Meanwhile a hypervisor is a virtualisation software that can be used to create and run virtual; machines.

Type 1 Hyper-V runs directly on the hardware while Type 2 Hyper-V runs on a conventional operating system. Examples of Type 1 Hyper-Vs include: VMware, KVM, vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V. Type 2 Hyper-Vs include: VMware Workstation, Oracle Virtualbox, Microsoft VirtualPC.
